How does urban farming in the hospitality industry drive sustainability?

With our edible vertical gardens, a venue can save up to 42,000 litres of water, grow up to 370kgs of produce on site, reduce food miles and help neutralize the carbon footprint, save up to 3700 single use plastic wrappers, ensure zero chemical pesticides are being used and prevent up to 185kgs of food waste*. *Growing on a wall installation of just 6 grobrix units. Assumptions, calculations and references found here.

What can we grow in a Grobrix edible vertical garden?

Select from over 50 varieties of non-GMO leafy greens, herbs, fruits, and edible flowers. Our carefully cultivated seedlings provide you with a 3-week head start, eliminating the hassle of germination and ensuring a 100% success rate. Visit our seedling store to explore our full range.

Why is farm to table important?

Consumers are becoming more mindful about where their food comes from and how it’s produced.

What if my team doesn't have experience growing vegetables/herbs/plants?

Whether you’re a green thumb, or a complete novice when it comes to growing and harvesting produce, we can tailor a service solution to you with a specialized urban farming team available to offer full support and help teach you how to become an urban farmer in your office, school, hotel, restaurant or other hospitality venue.

Is the produce grown on Grobrix organic?

Everything we grow is chemical pesticide free and farm to table fresh. Our grow plugs are compostable, biodegradable and organic.

What are the grow plugs made of?

Our grow plugs are made from a blend of coco coir which is an agricultural waste product and plant bark wrapped in a tea bag. They are compostable, biodegradable and organic.

What’s the yield? How much can i grow?

That depends on the crop. Each one has a different growth cycle. Some plants can be harvested many times. Some are fully harvested after 2 weeks and replaced with a new seedling. 4 Grobrix units can produce up to 12 kg of lettuce, 8kg of kale or 6kg of basil per month.

How long do the plants take to grow?

Each crop is different and has a different harvest cycle. Some crops can be harvested multiple times. Some are better harvested in one go and replaced with a new seedling. See the graphic illustration in the next section to understand more.

How does growing hydroponically differ from soil based farming?

In organic soil based farming, living organisms (worms, bacteria etc) consume decaying organic matter (manure, fish excrement) and produce inorganic ionic compounds (nitrate or ammonium for example). This is what the plants absorb through their roots. With hydroponics, we do not use worms and bacteria (no one wants those indoors). We suspend these inorganic ionic compounds in water and feed them directly to the roots of the plants.

How much power does Grobrix use?

An installation of 4 Grobrix Units draws a maximum of 400W. With the lights running 12 hours a day, we would consume around 150 KWh a month and this would cost you less than 40 SGD.

Do I need access to mains water?

No. Grobrix runs on a closed loop irrigation system. Our reservoirs are manually refilled by our urban farmers at regular visits along with our plant nutrients.

Is Grobrix patented?

Grobrix has a utility patent fully awarded in the United States and is patent pending in other countries across the world.

Are the lights UV?

No. The wavelength of UV light is 100 – 400 nanometers. The Grobrix light spectrum which is proprietary and designed in house exposes our crops to specific wavelengths of light from 400 to 780 nanometers.

What about pests?

The pests that we will encounter will be too small for the naked eye to detect and they are just part of pesticide free farming. Team Grobrix will visit each week to maintain the Grobrix wall and part of this will be diagnosing, isolating and managing any issues.

How long does the installation take?

Grobrix arrives at your location pre-assembled. It will take our team of farmers around 2 hours to set up your farm on site. We do not use any power tools and there is little mess.
